Enormous technological, industrial and social change transformed Paris and London during the 19th century. This course considers significant ways in which the burgeoning city inspired avant-garde artists on both sides of the Channel. We explore how Degas, Whistler and Sickert investigated colour and materials to create key modern paintings of the late 1900s and early 20th century.
