This is possibly the most popular of Shakespeare's comedies, full of magic and humour, mostly taking place in a nocturnal forest, during a night full of misunderstandings as the lovers, the workmen rehearsing a play and the Fairy King and Queen interact to create mayhem. The verse is rich and dazzling and the prose spoken by the mechanicals is robustly funny. How does the language help the actor to create a believable character? How does the modern actor become comfortable with blank verse, its metre and its structure? We will be looking at the play as a script and as a practical guide to the actor in rehearsal and performance.
