How could something, indeed everything, come from nothing ('ex nihilo'). This question lurks at the back of all creation myths and scientific hypotheses about the Universe. But the notion of creation ex nihilo also plays a significant role in how we understand, develop and assess how creative someone or something is, i.e. the extent to which they are ‘novel', ‘original' or ‘surprising’. But is this understanding of creativity fundamentally mistaken—and what are the alternatives?
