Assessing language ability in the first or the second language is a complex problem which has challenged educators, psychologists, speech and language therapists, linguists and technology experts for many years. The complexity lies in the need to assess different language skills, at different levels of proficiency, and for different purposes in a fair and rigorous way. While several successful assessment methods have been developed in the field of second language assessment, their focus has mostly been on the nature of the tools, their efficiency and fitness for purpose. In this webinar Professor Ianthi Tsimpli will address an additional challenge in the field of language assessment by focusing on the diversity of learners, their individual cognitive, linguistic and socio-cultural profiles and how these may affect performance in tasks developed for a “typical” language learner.
