Over the last sixty years, Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) has consistently explored the changing condition of painting in an age of mechanical reproduction. This course focuses on the impact of photography and digital technologies on four traditional painterly genres that span Richter’s career: portraiture, history painting, landscape painting, and the ornament.
