The Conquistadores were astonished to find that the Aztec capital was one of the world’s biggest; but their contradictory impression of orderliness and savagery has perplexed us ever since. Archaeological discoveries new and old, a fresh look at the Spaniards’ reports, and comparison with other cities helps to explain the paradox – with some disturbing implications for our own cities.
