The most famous English royal dynasty - the Tudors - retains a prominent place in popular memory. We look beyond their monarchs to consider 16th-century English society and its place within the wider world. How did ordinary Tudors perceive outsiders? We will examine the great changes wrought over the 16th century in the context of how the Tudors reflected on ideas of difference and the unknown world beyond their shores. We will encounter theatre-goers in Elizabethan London, Brazilian kings, Grand Viziers from Norfolk and Tsars, Shahs and Sultans. In travelling far from Tudor England, we will learn more about how the Tudors understood their own identity and defined what it might mean to be English.
